Marco Polo was born in Venice, Italy. At the age of 17 he joins his father and uncle on a voyage to China. They were gone for 24 years and when they arrived back Italy was at war. He was captured by soldiers and sent to prison. While he was in prison he wrote a book based on what he saw in China. There were magnificent illustrations and vocabulary describing the climate and food. When the book finally got published many people were charmed by that book and China became the state of the year. The war ended in 1299 and he was free. Marco Polo is well known for being a great trader and Italian explorer.
